Through assessing locations around the world based on living conditions, the Economist Intelligent Unit – a research and analysis division of The Economist Group – rates 140 cities worldwide and provides a global liveability ranking each year for the past 15 years. These cities are assigned a score on more than 30 factors across five categories:
- Stability – including prevalence of crime
- Healthcare – availability and quality
- Culture and environment – including weather, consumer goods and services
- Education – availability and quality
- Infrastructure – road networks and public transport, as well as housing and utilities
This year the city of Melbourne, capital of the state of Victoria, has once again topped the ratings as the most liveable city in the world with an overall score of 97.5 out of 100. This is the seventh year in a row that Melbourne has been identified as the most liveable city.
Why Melbourne?
Melbourne scored 100 in each of the categories for healthcare, education and infrastructure. Melbourne enjoys a relatively low crime rate and good road network. In terms of healthcare and education, Victoria has ten teaching hospitals and nine universities.
Those currently living in Melbourne say they enjoy the range of events and the fact that there is always something to do. They also enjoy the relatively short commute to the Central Business District (CBD). The tram network covers 240km and is considered one of the best in the world. While experiencing some hot days, the climate tends to be less extreme than some other cities and although the cost of living is often complained about by long-term residents, those who have travelled to other cities understand that cost of living is cheaper compared to many locations.
Melbourne architecture is a combination of iconic historic buildings and cutting edge tower blocks. It’s also known for its street art and renowned artist Banksy, who has contributed many works. The city also has lots of green space including parks and gardens. There is a multitude of shopping opportunities and in fact, many Sydney residents travel to Melbourne just for the shopping.
